Contra

This is in no way a review. I suck at reviews because, well, let’s be honest here. I usually enjoy everything I pick up because I pick up things I know I’ll enjoy. On the off chance I’m not totally enamored with whatever it is that I chose, it’s not much of a dislike — just not enough love for it.

On that note: I absolutely love Contra by Vampire Weekend. The album as a whole … just works. It’s definitely more mature than their eponymous debut album, and I’m loving the increase of drum usage (and other instruments. Dur). I don’t really remember who got me into Vampire Weekend, but I saw them at the Roger’s Picnic back in 2008 (okay, a year and a half ago) and they were so. much. fun. and really good.

The flack they got for being a group of Ivy League prepsters was not deserved. One doesn’t need to be a starving artist to be able to write music and produce stuff people will enjoy. Not that I have any talent myself, so really, I’m just saying that I quite enjoy Vampire Weekend and their adorable sweaters and loafers and outfits that doesn’t hide who they are.

I’d give a listen to all the songs, and see which strikes your fancy. While “Horchata” makes me smile, and “Diplomat’s Son” is my friend, Allie’s current favourite, “Taxi Cab” is one of my favourites. The auto-tune in “California English” while strange at first, is beginning to grow on me in a lovely way.

I’m a super huge fan of songs that make me smile, make me want to dance, and really, are easy to listen to. That’s what Vampire Weekend is — an easy listen that sometimes makes me smile and sometimes makes me want to dance.
